Mosaic Tiling in Thames View, Barking

Mosaic tiling in Thames View, Barking. Mosaic sheets, borders and shower floors fitted so the joints line through and the sheets do not show.

Mosaic is the tiling people notice when it is done badly. The giveaway is the sheet: if the joints between sheets are wider or narrower than the joints within them, the whole wall reads as a grid of squares rather than a field of small tiles.

Getting that right means setting out the sheets so they land sensibly, easing individual tesserae where a sheet has stretched, and keeping the adhesive bed even - mosaic is thin and any ridge under it shows straight through as a shadow. On a shower floor it also has to follow the fall, which is precisely why mosaic is used there: lots of small tiles handle a curved plane where one large tile cannot.

Thames View, like much of this side of Barking, has a lot of flats where the bathroom is interior and windowless, so ventilation and grout choice matter more than usual. An epoxy or a good modern cement grout with additive stays cleaner for far longer in a room that never fully dries out.

Most of the mosaic work we do in Thames View and across Barking is in shower enclosures, or as a border in a bathroom tiled in something plainer. That is mosaic where it earns its keep, rather than across a whole Thames View bathroom, where it can quickly feel busy.

Borders and inset panels are their own exercise: the surrounding tiles have to be set out around the border, not the other way round, or the pattern arrives at the corner wrong. Tiles that sound hollow when tapped, grout cracking in the same line twice, or a floor that gives underfoot are worth looking at before anything new goes over them.

What's involved

How we do Mosaic Tiling in Barking

Sheet joints hidden

Set out and adjusted so the grid of the sheet does not show in the finished wall.

Even adhesive bed

Mosaic is thin; ridges under it show through as shadows.

Shower floors that follow the fall

Small tiles flex over the curve to the drain, which is why they belong there.

Grout chosen for the room

In a windowless bathroom, a grout that resists mould is worth the extra.

Borders set out first

The field tiles are planned around the border so the pattern meets the corner properly.

Sealed where needed

Natural stone and glass mosaics get the right treatment; standard ceramic does not need it.

Good to know

Mosaic Tiling: common questions

Is mosaic harder to keep clean?

There is more grout, so the grout choice matters. A good epoxy or additive grout in a shower makes the difference.

Can you use mosaic on a shower floor?

It is the best choice for one, because the small tiles follow the fall to the drain.

How long does mosaic take compared to normal tiles?

Longer - more setting out and more adjustment per square metre. Worth knowing before you choose it for a whole room.

Can you do a border or a feature strip?

Yes, and the surrounding tiling is set out around it so it lands where it should.

Does it suit a small bathroom?

In a shower or as a feature, yes. Over a whole small room it can feel busy, and we will say so before you buy it.

Which areas do you cover?

Thames View, Gascoigne, Barking, Creekmouth and nearby.
